Criteria For the Best GPS For Geocaching
It’s a fact; no one can participate in or even think about locating a cache, no matter its difficulty rating, without a reliable and accurate GPS unit.
Keep in mind, however, that not all GPS devices are the same, and the same features that would be absolutely necessary in order to be the best GPS for geocaching to one person, might be considered almost incidental to the next.
So, the best GPS unit for Geocaching for any individual is probably a personal matter depending upon their skill level, physical conditioning, terrain, and difficulty of the cache.
Geocaching is not only frenetically catching on, you might say, because of the ever increasing worldwide access to the Internet, it is sweeping the globe. Individuals, groups, and organizations are hiding caches and posting them for all to see online.
It’s easy, just boot up your computer, and target a cache of your choice. It can be near your home, down at the local park, near a river bank, on the side of a mountain or smack in the middle of some desert. Literally, caches are placed all over the world.
People from all walks of life, from all countries, and from all economic levels are quickly becoming avid participants in the fun, exciting and challenging treasure hunting game of geocaching.
And, if you’re just beginning the sport, there are a number of important GPS features that would be beneficial to and enhance your early success as a geocacher. Some of the more recent GPS units even have built-in features that are geospecific to the adventurous game of geocaching.
Here are critical GPS features to consider before purchasing the GPS device that you’ll be using when tracking down a cache:
1. Look for a screen that is of decent size, with good contrast, and make sure that it is easy to read. Also, check to make sure that it has trans reflective properties for easy readability in bright sunlight.
2. The GPS should be able to lock onto satellite signals quickly, and it should be accurate to within ten feet. The device should provide guidance through heavy tree and cloud cover, or while in your pocket, or even through the windshield of your auto? For this, you may want it to be WAAS-enabled for accurate pinpointing of caches, and you’ll need twelve parallel channels.
3. It should be fairly small and lightweight for easy carrying. Look for one that will be small enough to fit into your pocket.
4. It should be easy to understand the information you’re receiving. You’ll want your GPS unit to have the capability of marking no less than 500 waypoints. These are significant points along the way. This capability will help you find caches easily and will, most importantly, keep you from getting lost.
5. The unit you choose should be waterproof. At some point, on one or many of your hunts, your GPS will get wet. You may drop it in a puddle, it will come a torrential downpour, you’ll slip in a river or stream, trust me, you can plan on its getting wet no matter how many plastic bags you bring along.
6. How sturdy and rugged is it? As a natural part of geocaching, your GPS will get dropped and roughed up a lot. If you’re a hiking/camping geocacher, you may be receiving information that will take you through brush, over rocks, across rivers, and through forests. Naturally, your unit will get banged up.
7. Finally, the GPS you choose should have a descent battery life. Generally speaking, the longer the battery life, the better, but also, the bigger the battery, the heavier the weight of the GPS. If you weigh 110 lbs., the unit’s weight will be a real consideration. If this is the case, you could opt for a lighter weight device, and just take along some extra batteries. In no event, do you want your GPS to quit on you before you locate the cache.
You can find GPS units with all of these features in almost every price range, size, shape and color, but you should make sure that the one you actually purchase for your geocaching treasure hunting adventures at least has these minimum features.
Discount Marine Electronics GPS Software – Garmin BlueChart G2 series
Confused about the complex array of marine navigation software for your Garmin Marine GPS? You are not alone. Here we will take a look at how to find the right charts and what format to purchase to ensure it is compatible with your marine GPS.
BlueChart g2 Vision is highly detailed, visual representation of above and below water with 3 dimensional perspective. High resolution satellite imagery is standard with most Garmin chart plotters. When you upgrade with the optional regional maps you also get aerial photography that provides unparalleled detail for navigation using realistic visual representations. BlueChart g2 charts install in your GPS using the SD card slot on the device to provide complete marine coverage.
The 3-D mapping capability allows you switch between topside view and fish eye view for a realistic picture above or below the water. Below the surface views include shaded depth contours and other features such as reefs, rocks, and shoals. Optional auto guidance software charts the safest known route automatically avoiding known obstacles such as buoys, reefs, harbors and so on. You can also get information about fishing charts, tides, currents, wrecks, anchorages and other points of interest.
Garmin is continuously updating their stock of aerial photographs and satellite imagery to constantly improve the BlueChart for their line of marine GPS electronics.
Find the Right Charts for your Marine GPS
Garmin makes two types of software. BlueChart software is a series of maps for coastal waters and the Great Lakes of North America. BlueChart also covers other worldwide large bodies of water. For example, Blue Chart Americas covers North and South America. For Asia and Oceania, choose BlueChart Pacific and for European and African marine adventures choose BlueChart Atlantic.
For boating in the interior on any of America’s abundant freshwater lakes, choose Inland Lakes software for your Garmin marine GPS.
Installing the Charts on your Marine GPS
Formats for Garmin’s marine GPS software line include CD-ROM and USB data card. Typically for GPS chart plotter, you purchase the CD-ROM and upload the data onto your PC. Then you use a data card programmer (which connects to your PC’s USB port) to transfer information onto a memory card that you install in the chart plotter’s memory card slot. You can purchase blank memory cards of various sizes to do this. Garmin’s handheld series of marine GPS may have internal memory that allows you to upload the chart data directly into the unit (bypassing the need for a memory card). Other models use a micro-SD card for uploading charts directly.
The CD-ROM method requires you to unlock the software for the region you have purchased with a special license key. If you don’t want to use the PC method you can also purchase pre-programmed SD memory cards with the BlueChart software already embedded. These do not require license keys, but on the whole you get more flexibility with the PC approach. Having the navigation and charting software on your PC allows you to plan ahead. You can also save waypoints to the computer. Having routes and waypoints backed up to your PC is a good precaution against data loss as well.
Different Garmin marine GPS devices have different requirements and capabilities for uploading the maps, so when you are purchasing discount charts and add on marine electronics online have your model number handy for reference.
U.S. Mexican border: Attention Concerned Citizens
By Michael Webster: Syndicated Investigative Reporter. May 6, 2010, at 12:01 PM PDT
The border between Mexico and the United States spans four U.S. states, six Mexican states, and has over twenty commercial railroad crossings.
According to the Concerned Citizens they want to alert you to a new citizen activist opportunity to help observe and report the daily invasion across our southern border with Mexico.
This is not a Minuteman or extremist group sponsored event – just a call to action by a group of “Concerned Citizens”.
If you and or your group is interested you can contact them through e-mail: wibcom@aol.com
Concerned Citizens report that DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and the other race baiting, ethnocentric anarchists want the people of America to believe the border is under “operational control”. Nothing could be further from the truth says an organizer with the new group of “Concerned Citizens” and they say they are ready to deploy, to video tape and educate Americans about the real threat to National Security and our public safety.
“Concerned Citizens” want a full blown showing of people who can come out and enjoy our federal lands. This will be people coming together to help AZ Governor Jan Brewer and the people of Arizona to bring attention to the need for National Guard on our southern border.
The group is in support of Jan Brewer signing SB1070 and say they want to help educate the public. they say “It’s time to bring back the” Minuteman Type Lines”
The group points out that there are 30 miles of area in a straight line that they want to cover. Which make it perfect for a “Line”
What action? They say that there propose is doing what they do best….. “DETERRENCE BY PRESENCE”
They intend to kick off the program ASAP and operate it for at least 2-3 weeks.
The locations of deployment is: Interstate 8, 45 miles south of downtown Phoenix
where they expect to place multiple base camps at major choke points.
To all Concerned Citizens who may be interested in participating, or if you got an invite to the I-8 opp or have committed to getting involved you need to be clear on a few things, according to organizers.
1. This “IS NOT” a Simcox/MCDC,PBA,BPOX or any of the many other groups event!! Those groups/people were only
asked to use there contact lists to get the word out, PERIOD!!
Leave the politics at home…..
2. This I-8 corridor is very active and “VERY DANGEROUS”, there is a very good chance you will see “ARMED DRUG LOADS”!!
This opp “IS NOT” for 1st timers,we expect you to be ready and at the top of your game with all the necessary gear for
this type of opp and for being self sufficient for desert camping!
3. With that said, the biggest thing we can do on this opp is to be seen by the public on I-8 so we will post on every mile
marker (that’s were all the action is anyway) for a 30 mi. stretch. We will provide maps/intel/phone numbers on site as
needed, there should be 2 vehicles & 4 people min. per mi. marker for safety.
To the Concerned Citizens that have already committed to working working I-8 Thank You for supporting Arizona.
We will be getting kicked off on the 15th and run as long as we have people.
Location will be given after you confirm that you are still interested, I had over three hundred e-mails sorry it took so long to back to you all.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL……..

SOP: detect, report & observe
“Concerned Citizens” continue to do the job the Federal Government won’t do by securing the border south of Phoenix along Interstate 8. Let’s show them how it COULD be done if Congress put Troops on the border.
How do we do that? Detect report & observe. Eyes and ears. Local law enforcement in the area “gets it”. This area is extremely active. No apprehensions, citizen’s arrests or high speed chases on I-8 (nothing wrong with “leaving the light on” for them at night).
The area south of Interstate 8 between Gila Bend (Junction 85 & I-8) and Casa Grande (Junction I-8 & I-10) is a major smuggling corridor…..drugs, IAs, weapons….. We’ve seen it all. This is approximately a 60 mile stretch, but not all that distance is active with smuggling. The traffic comes up through the Tohono D’ O’dham Reservation day and night.
The fact that load vehicles use I-8 to enter this area, pick up their loads and leave the area makes them vulnerable to detection. Load areas on I-8 are typically one of the following: dirt roads, major washes and/or mile markers. Mile markers are used a “waypoints” by the load vehicles, so this also makes them vulnerable to detection.
Bottom line, if we had enough dedicated individuals “camped out” on the entire known active load up points on I-8, we could effectively shut this area down. A lot of recon has been completed in this area so we know this is doable…. just a matter of enough dedicated individuals.
This IS a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area and is potentially very dangerous so participating individuals who need to be prepared to defend themselves.
This is just one group’s idea of something to do to make a difference and make a statement. Pass this around and see what interest there is in doing something like this
